That is the way I write my characters because sometimes that's the way I see certain people around me. The people I encounter on a daily basis inspire my characters. I just take my experiences with them and ratchet their characteristics up to the next level of craziness.
So, imagine my reaction when author and entrepreneur Edward Medina invited me to join Black Wolf Print as one of three founding authors with the understanding that I would submit a children's book for publishing in 2015.
2015? That made me nervous, but don't get it twisted. I consider Ed to be my soul brother and we have this mutual admiration society thing going on. I think I know him pretty well. Ed doesn't feed you bs. He is a straight shooter who is also one of the most supportive, loving, sensitive, smartest individuals I know. I was flattered but at the same time I was very nervous about messing this up.
"A children's book?" I thought aloud.
"OMG! I'm not sure I can do that! My thoughts run so dark!"
Ed's response? To paraphrase: "Yes you can and we'll be right here to help if you stumble."
Black Wolf Print has an edict. Mr. Medina's introductory post on Facebook stated, in part:
"Throughout my years as an independent author and publisher, I have always believed in #authorshelpingauthors. I intend BWP to be a place where new talent is discovered, nurtured, and released upon the world."
So, what am I worried about??
Yes, it is a little bit terrifying for me to step out of my comfort zone of serial killers and sociopaths and write a story geared for a child -- albeit an older child -- but I see this as an opportunity to grow and expand my horizon. I have no right to close the door on such a gift.
With that kind of support, I am comfortable taking the plunge and will gleefully write that story for BWP, as agreed. In addition, I will be working on other really exciting projects for the company. Those will be revealed in due time :)
Stay with me folks! This is going to be fun!!
