Remember Where You Came From!
It’s not like they mean well, because they don’t.
Those people are sometimes family, sometimes old friends from the neighborhood.
Some have done well and want to keep you down, others are stuck in their own little box and want company.
Here is what I say to them…
I will NEVER forget where I came from! How could I? Where I came from has had such an emotional effect on my life, that it is impossible to forget. I just don’t want to go back there. I like where I am now much better.
I was raised in a typical Hispanic household, and my Culture had it’s limitations. Being the independent type, I tried to be different … but my Culture had other plans for me.
“Who do you think you are?” was something I heard on a regular basis. As a woman, I was discouraged from doing anything other than what was expected of me. Go to college? Hah! I was told to graduate High School, get married and have kids. So I did. And I was not happy about it. What I really wanted to be was a Police Officer! Sounds pretty radical, huh? But that’s who I was. Well, what I heard over and over was: “women don’t do that.” So I didn’t.
As a teen, most of my sisters and friends were interested in boys and dating. I wanted to play sports with my brothers.
"Dress like a girl," I was told.
I resisted this one, because I like jeans and sneakers … but for sure I heard about it.
Hang out with people from other cultures? NO WAY! I was told: “Stick to your own kind,” so I did, and when I didn’t, I sure heard about it!
So I will NEVER forget where I came from. How could I? For years I lived by what my culture dictated.
Stay small, be like everyone else. Stick to your own kind!
Over and over the beliefs of my culture handcuffed me to mediocrity. I did not know any better. I did not know I had a choice! But not any more! I refused to allow it any more. Slowly I climbed outside my cultural boundaries. I released my spiritual self. I meditated. People began to look at me weird.
“We don’t do things like that”… so I took yoga classes! I found a man from a different culture and nationality.
“Stick to your own kind”… so I married him!
I was tired of the dead end job I had for 25 years, and I wanted to be of service.
“Remember where you came from”… so I started a business!
Diversity Leads to Opportunity!
By daring to step outside my cultural boundaries, I was introduced to a diverse world brimming with opportunities!
By opening up my mind, I could Be, Do or Have ANYTHING I wanted for my life. All because I dared to be different. All because I finally chose my life instead if my life deciding for me.
You can have this too, it is available to everyone.
I still have my culture!
It just doesn’t hold me back!
